What is Sports Massage?
Sports Massage is often a lighter combination of massage techniques to prepare muscle tissue for competition. Sports Massage consists of fast strokes to increase blood flow to the muscle, as well as some other superficial techniques to stimulate the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS). The (SNS) is responsible for our “fight and flight” response, eg. the jump in our heart rate and awareness when someone scares us. There is convincing evidence that indicates sports performance in athletes increases with increased stimulation of the (SNS).
Depending on the phase of training, competition or injury that the athlete is in, sports massage can include more specific techniques. For example if an athlete is seeking treatment 3-5 days out from competition and has a specific niggle that is hampering their performance then Myotherapy is likely going to be more beneficial at addressing their problem and improving their performance.
